- Description:
-
This is an eleven-page document giving information on the several training courses for army secretaries and physical directors provided by Springfield College from 1917 to 1918. On the first page, it gives a summary of one of the courses being provided at the college for those who serve in the YMCA in army camps and includes a list of faculty members that will be available to instruct. The second page is a continuation of the first page explaining the price of tuition (including room and board). It also details the hours expected of the course. At the bottom of the page is a section underlined as Course of Study, which lists some things to be studied in the class. The third page is a continuation of the first two pages and continues the list and details the eligibility of the courses. On the fourth page, there is an explanation of war work courses ('Association History' and 'Executive Administration and Control') and is signed by Laurence L. Doggett. The fifth page is written by W.C. Ballantine, who explains the aims of a course in the New Testament. The sixth page is titled 'Synopsis of Lecture Courses in First and and Hygiene to YMCA War Work Men.' It includes a list of 20 lecture titles. The seventh page was written by Philomene Langevin, titled "Courses in French," who details the reasoning behind the courses. On the eighth page is the expectations of the course "Music in War Courses" written by a man named H. On the ninth page, it is titled "Synopsis of Normal Practice Work" by William M. Forgrave and gives a summary of the six lectures to be given and the plan of what practice work would entail. The tenth page is titled "'Leadership" by W.J. Campbell and explains the course 'Science and Practice of Group Leadership," including the theme, the number of hours expected, and the things to be studied during the course. The last page is also written by Campbell, titled "Discussion Groups 12 and 1.20," in which he explains that the class would be doing small group discussions and then listen to five general presentations by other faculty members (which are detailed at the bottom of the page). This item was originally bound in a book titled “War-Work Courses in Great War, 1917-1918 Incomplete.” This volume was unbound and its contents foldered in the original order, which is chronological. The binding string was cut and the glue was removed with a razor blade. The edges are intact and the placement of stitches are visible. Each page or booklet was individually lifted out of the binding and placed in their own folder or a folder with like materials. Oversized materials were removed and placed in the oversized materials collection.
