- Description:
-
This hand colored architect drawing titled "Preliminary Study of Campus Development: Springfield YMCA College" was done by E.C. and G.C. Gardner and the Olmsted Brother Landscape Architects. The Springfield YMCA College, refers to the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. The drawing was believed to have been done in 1926. It shows a sketch for the future development of the International YMCA College. The dormitory (Alumni Hall), the administration building, and Woods Hall are shown in the design, as well as a potential library, athletic unit, science building, auditorium, another dormitory and the President's House. Pratt field is also shown on the right side of the picture and Lake Massasoit on the bottom left. The drawing shows how the existing structures, colored in, would be worked into the construction of the newer buildings. To see a fully colored version of these plans, see: http://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15370coll2/id/9347. Olmsted Brothers Company was a landscape architectural firm in the United States. Two brothers, John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. (the sons of architect Frederick Law Olmsted) started the firm in 1898. Their father is most known for his work for New York’s Central Park. The firm completed many popular projects throughout the United States, including parks, universities, libraries, and hospitals. A few of their more famous designs include the Great Smoky Mountains and Acadia National Parks, Washington States Northern Hospital, Harvard Business School, John Hopkins University, and Stanford University. On back is written "rec'd at the library / June 2, 1936". It is believed that this does not refer to the date created given that the Olmsted Stamp on the back of large framed drawing is Sept. 29, 1926.;
