This black-and-white photograph shows United Service Organizations (USO) workers learning how to take chest x-rays at the Booker T. Washington Community Center in San Francisco. The people, left to right, are Priscilla Norman, Louise Sweed, Anita Patterson, Lorraine Crawford, and Leon Dunwell (the technician). The women are training for a four-day period when the Booker T. Washington Community Center was offering free chest x-rays. The x-rays were sponsored by the center, the Second District of California Congress of Parents and Teachers, the San Francisco Tuberculosis Association, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is a nonprofit organization that provides programs, services, and live entertainment to United States troops and their families. Since 1941, it has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD), relying heavily on private contributions and on funds, goods, and services from various corporate and individual donors. Although congressionally chartered, it is not a government agency. The Booker T. Washington Center was launched shortly after World War I as a resource for San Francisco’s African American population.
