<mods:abstract>Richard Stevens painted this watercolor of Springfield College’s Babson Library in the spring time. It is believed to have been painted in 1976 and is part of a series of four paintings of Springfield College buildings, including: Alumni Hall in the Summer, the Memorial Field House in the Fall, and Judd Gymnasium in the Winter. To see the other paintings in this series see: http://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15370coll2/id/7967, http://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15370coll2/id/7968, http://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15370coll2/id/7969. Babson Library was named after Mr. and Mrs. Paul T. Babson who donated one million dollars towards the construction of a new Springfield College library in commemoration of their 50th wedding anniversary. Other gifts and contributions from students, alumni, faculty, administrative staff, parents, corporations, foundations and friends of the college comprised the additional funds needed to build the $2,000,000 library. The groundbreaking ceremony for Babson Library was held on January 10th, 1970 and the dedication took place on September 18th 1971. At the time of the dedication, the library had not yet been completed; the library was formally completed and opened on January 3, 1972. Babson Library replaced Marsh Memorial which served as the college’s library for nearly sixty years. In 1987, the plan was made to add a simple ramp coming from the west side of the library to the main entrance to increase handicapped access to Springfield College. On September 12, 1988, the Dedication ceremony of the new access ramp was held. For biographical information on Frank Wolcott, see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/54. This painting was donated by Coach Frank Wolcott in 2013.</mods:abstract>
