<mods:abstract>"History, Use, Effects, and Limitation of Basketball," is a thesis written by Springfield College student, Thomas James Brown in 1898 about the history and philosophy of basketball. There are two handwritten copies within Springfield Library. It appears that this copy may be the first draft, even though the Springfield College library has given it the designation of "Copy 2." This thesis was also published in Spalding's Official Basket Ball Guide for 1898. Page 3 of the document outlines the entire thesis, which includes the invention of the game of basketball, the spread of the game, and experience of some Associations, including Hartford's successes, and Philadelphia's failure with the league. The thesis also discussed the action of physical directors at various conferences and steps leading towards to requirement for players to register to play. As a result of the new push for registration, new basketball organizations were formed and Browne discussed this, as well as resolutions of physical directors at the Conference of 1898. Part II included results of Browne's investigation of the effects of the game. He looked at the attitudes of physical directors towards different plans of using the game and the effects of the game on Association memberships. Browne reached conclusions and displayed these in charts at the end of the thesis.
