This scrapbook was given to Dr. Paul Limbert, Springfield College’s sixth president, by G. Newlin-Wagner. Each page has a 5x7 black-and-white photograph taken in 1949 at a summer camp in Germany. In its final summer, the camp, which was nicknamed the Springfield 2nd, recruited the help of the YMCA and YWCA in order to host youth who had been displaced during World War II. According to the letter inside the cover, after receiving reports of Limbert’s “tour in the U.S. Zone visiting DP Camps” and “great interest in the World’s YMCA services for Displaced Persons in Germany,” Newlin-Wagner wanted to present Limbert with this “pictorial report” of the camp. The letter suggests that the camp was nicknamed the Springfield 2nd because many of the counselors graduated from the college. A displaced persons camp is a temporary facility for displaced persons threatened into forced migration. The term is mainly used for camps established after World War II in West Germany and in Austria, as well as in the United Kingdom, primarily for refugees from Eastern Europe and for the former inmates of the Nazi German concentration camps. Such camps are now generally known as refugee camps. By 1953, over 250,000 refugees were still in Europe. According to the catalogue records, there is a second letter to Limbert. However, that is no longer with the scrapbook. For more information on Paul M. Limbert, see https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/597.
