<mods:abstract>This is a portion scrapbook was created by Springfield College alumnus David Lynn Herrington in 1974-75. The photographs show the Cherokee Track Club competing in track and field meets. The photographs on the first few pages were taken during a side trip to Washington, D.C. before a meet at the University of Maryland. Herrington was born on March 1, 1949 in New York City. He earned his undergraduate degree from Lea College (Minnesota) in 1972 and his master’s degree from Springfield College. When he entered Springfield College in the fall of 1973, he taught the women’s skills and techniques course in track. At the time there was no track team, although a number of girls were competing individually and some had even competed in various national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) track meets. Recognizing the need for a team, Herrington, with the support of Coach Vern Cox, created the Cherokee Track Club. The club had all the implications of an intercollegiate team, but no official school sanction. The following year, the college accepted a proposed budget for the full sponsorship of a women’s track team. The Cherokee Track Club ultimately became the women’s varsity track and field team. The scrapbook was created and owned by David Herrington. The Scrapbook was returned to David Herrington after pages were digitized; The archives has a print facsimile within the collection created from the scans; The front and back covers, as well as pages with personal photographs, were not digitized, and are not included in the print facsimile;</mods:abstract>
