  <mods:abstract>This hand-colored lantern slide shows Peter Karpovich, head of the physiology department at Springfield College, running a gas analyzer for metabolism study with a student in 1939. The gas analyzer was assembled and partly built by National Youth Administration (NYA) participants.This photograph is similar to - http://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15370coll2/id/4963. Karpovich, see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/571 The NYA was as New Deal agency that focused on providing work and education for Americans between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five. It operated from June, 26 1935 to 1939 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Following the passage of the Reorganization Act of 1939, the NYA was transferred to the Federal Security Agency. In 1942, the NYA was transferred to the War Manpower Commission (WMC). The NYA officially folded in 1943. According to a sticker on the fame, this is #87 in a series.</mods:abstract>
