Item Information
- Title:
- Three SC Buildings
- Description:
-
This hand-colored lantern slide shows three buildings at the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. The buildings are, left to right, the Administration Building, Alumni Hall, and Marsh Memorial. A car is parked outside of the administration building. Beneath the image is a caption: “He finds the days slip into weeks and weeks into months. He makes new friends. He enjoys the well-balanced campus life with its time for work, time for play, and time for cultural development. He wonders how Springfield College found so many friendly men for its efficient faculty.” This lantern slide is part of a series called "The Story of the Cinema of Springfield College." Its alternate title is “Being the Story of a Young Man who elects to go to Springfield College.” The presentation was likely given during the 1930s and included images of campus buildings, faculty, and students engaged in athletic and cultural activities. Construction began on the Administration Building the last week in April of 1895 and the corner stone of the building was laid on May 10, 1895. On September 22, 1926, the cornerstone of the Alumni Hall, the new men’s dormitory, was laid. Just one year after the cornerstone was laid, Alumni Hall was completed. Finally, excavation for Marsh Memorial began on May 25, 1912. The cornerstone was laid by President Laurence Locke Doggett on June 12, 1912 and construction began on September 1, 1912. According to a sticker on the fame, this is #113 in a series.
