This photograph shows four Springfield College alumni standing outside of a building. They are (left to right) Sundaram Srivatsan (’56), Edward Stephen Steitz (’48), Sadanand D. Chopde (’54), and Chalasani Venkateswara Rao (’59). Steitz and Chopde are holding a bag and shaking hands. Sundaram Srivatsan won a distinguished alumni award from Springfield College in 1992. After graduating, he spent forty-one years working in the field of physical education and sports in India. As part of this work, he served as a professor and as the dean of faculty at the Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. Srivatsan retired in 1988. After graduating from Springfield College in 1954, Sadanand D. Chopde served as principal of Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education in Gwalior, India, and as principal of the YMCA College of Physical Education in Chennai (Madras), India. In December 1980, he was awarded the Buck’s National Award for meritorious service to the cause of physical education in India. Chopde was also closely associated with the Union Ministry of Education and Culture, in his capacity as the principal of one of the two National Institutes of Physical Education and Sports. He was one of the most prominent physical education experts in the country. Chopde died on February 6, 1981. Chalasani Venkateswara Rao earned his undergraduate, masters, and doctorate degrees from Springfield College. Little else is known about him. For biographical information on Edward S.
