<mods:abstract>This photograph shows Springfield College faculty member Peter John Polito sitting at a computer. Professor Polito attended Somerville High School and graduated in 1960. He then attended Northeastern University, where he earned his BA in Physics (1965), MS in Physics (1967), and Ph.D. in Physics (1971). Springfield College hired Polito as a physics professor in 1970. While teaching, he also served on the school’s Environmental Studies Committee and ran a ten-week seminar called “Environmental Issues of the 1980’s: Acid Rain, Hazardous Waste, Agricultural Preservation.” Furthermore, he served on the Steering Committee of the Hampden County Energy Task Force. Springfield College granted him tenure in January 1975. In 1980, Professor Polito was chosen as one of twenty undergraduate faculty members from across the country to discuss energy in the Texaco Faculty Forum. He is now a professor of computer science and physics, and he continues to teach at Springfield College. His hobbies, as listed in his faculty background sheet on October 3, 1980, include carpentry, gardening, and auto repairs. He is also the creator of Springfield College's Humanics Day.</mods:abstract>
