This photograph shows Dr. Peter Karpovich (left) and Harry Le Maistre (right) standing behind a student next to the pool in Judd Gymnasium. The student is connected to a machine monitoring his respiration. Harry Le Maistre, originally from Melbourne, Australia, was one of twenty-three foreign students studying at Springfield College in 1939. While at the school, he was featured as a “muscle men” in a photo essay published in Life magazine; the photograph showed Karpovich painting life-like muscles onto Le Maistre’s body.
