This photograph shows Don Whitney Marshman (class of 1959), a gymnast and student at Springfield College, performing a black flip. On February 26, 1958, Don Marshman died from injuries received in a fall in the gymnasium the preceding day. Springfield College canceled classes and athletic events that day, and they held a memorial service in the Field House. In his first year as a varsity gymnast, having no previous training, he won several trophies and medals and established himself as the New England Trampoline and Flying Rings Champion. Marshman was unanimously elected captain of the freshman gymnastics team. Although he came to the school as a physical education major, he soon turned to medicine with the goal of becoming a doctor. The 1959 Massasoit, Springfield College’s yearbook, was dedicated to him.
