This photograph, taken in October 1958, shows (left to right) Vernon W. Cox, Irv Schmid, and Walter A. Johnson standing outside. Johnson is wearing a Springfield College Instructor shirt. Cox graduated from Springfield College in 1944 and immediately joined the Army Air Corp, where he fought in the Pacific Theater. In 1947, joined the Springfield College faculty as a physical education instructor, where he coached soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, cross country and track and field. In 1977, Cox became the college’s alumni director. He passed away in 1991, after forty-four years of serving the college community. Irvin R. Schmid graduated from Springfield College and soon began coaching soccer at his alma mater. During his thirty-six years at the school, he earned an overall coaching record of 271-162-50 and a winning percentage of .613. Under his leadership, the men’s soccer team won multiple New England Championships, a National Championship, and an ECAC Regional Championship. Walter A. Johnson was a faculty member and alumnus of Springfield College. Johnson graduated in 1951 with his BS in physical education from Springfield College. For the next two years, he served in the United States Marine Corps. After returning to Wellesley, Massachusetts, he spent three years as a physical education instructor at the local high school. During this time, he coached football, wrestling, swimming, and gymnastics. In 1957, Springfield College hired him as a professor of physical education. Johnson remained in this position until 1968, and earned his MS in physical education (1961) and his M.Ed while teaching.
