<mods:abstract>This photograph shows Edward J. Brennan, Jr. (left) shaking hands with Randolph Bromery (right), Springfield College's eleventh president. Brennan appears to be passing Bromery an unidentified item, possibly a key. Behind them is a bookcase. Edward J. Brennan, Jr. owned and operated Brennan College Services, Inc. (located in Springfield) from 1967 until 1991, when he sold the company. Brennan donated the company’s corporate headquarters to Springfield College, which now uses the facility for the College's School of Social Work. Brennan was a former trustee of Elms College (Chicopee, MA), the Wilbraham-Monson Academy, the Springfield Library and Museums Association, the Visiting Nurses Association and the Springfield YMCA. Randolph W. Bromery (January 18, 1926 – February 26, 2013) was born in Cumberland, Maryland, to Edith Edmonson and Lawrence Randolph Bromery. He worked as a machinist in Detroit and then enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. After his 1945 discharge, Bromery studied at Howard University, working at the US Geological Survey as an airborne exploration geophysicist—the first black professional geophysicist with the USGS. Bromery joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1969 and became chancellor in 1971. While chancellor, he was instrumental in establishing the Five Colleges Consortium. Under his leadership, the University of Massachusetts became an early center for the emerging discipline of African-American studies. Bromery secured the papers of W. E. B. Du Bois and Horace Mann Bond for the university's special collections. From 1992 to 1999, he served as Springfield College’s eleventh president.</mods:abstract>
