Letter to Archibald from President Locklin (April 15, 1975)

Wilbert E. Locklin, President of Springfield College, wrote this letter to Betty Archibald, the daughter of Lyman W. Archibald (class of 1893), who was one of the first people to play the game of Basketball created by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. The letter is dated April 15, 1975. In this letter, Locklin assures Archibald that neither Springfield College nor the Basketball Hall of Fame authorized the use of James Naismith’s name in an Old Crow advertisement. Old Crow is a brand of Kentucky-made straight bourbon whiskey and was one of the state’s earliest distilleries. It is now distilled by Beam Inc., which also produces Jim Beam.
