This lantern slide shows roughly sixteen young men, holding shovels and picks, and one little girl standing in front of Marsh Memorial Library, near the Administration Building at the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. Many are wearing shirts bearing the red triangle, the official emblem of Springfield College and the YMCA. According to old catalogue records, these men are likely juniors (class of 1918). This slide was taken sometime during November 1916, when the students were given three days off from classes to participate in Work Days. During this time, the students used sand to grade land as part of a construction project. Grading refers to the engineering and construction work necessary to ensure a level base (or one with a specified slope). Teams were hired to deliver sand, and the students worked in units of twelve. Springfield College gave free cider and doughnuts to the students. According to old catalogue notes, Mr. Bunker organized this project, which was one of several campus grading projects completed by students. Text on border reads, "YMCA College; Juniors Grading nothing of Library; 1916."
