Description:
This hand-colored lantern slide, “Hockey on South Field (c. 1910),” shows students of the International YMCA Training School, now known as Springfield College, playing hockey on South Field. The building in the left corner is Judd Gymnasium, and the building partially obscured by trees on the right is the Administration Building. Judd Gymnasia, known today as East Gymnasium, was the first building erected on the new land along Massasoit Lake purchased for Springfield College. Morrissey and Shea’s Corporation completed construction in September 1894, and it was formally opened on October 26, 1894. This gymnasium was where James Naismith taught classes and coached the school’s basketball team, but not the specific building where he invented basketball. In 1910, trustees authorized the addition of a second gymnasium and swimming pool. The Administration Building was the school’s first dormitory, and it also contained classrooms and a dining hall. Construction began the last week of April 1895, and the cornerstone of the building was laid on May 10, 1985 with President Charles H. Barrows officiating. The dedication took place on June 17, 1896, at which President Barrows introduced the college’s fourth president, Laurence L. Doggett. Text on border reads, "Hockey on old So. Field."
