- Description:
-
This hand-colored lantern slide, “Dormitory and Washington Gladden Boathouse,” shows the Dormitory (now the Administration Building) and Washington Gladden Boat House. These buildings are seen from a vantage point across Massasoit Lake. Both buildings belong to the International YMCA Training School, now known as Springfield College. The Administration Building originally housed the dormitory, classrooms, and dining hall. Construction began the last week of April 1895, and the cornerstone of the building was laid on Friday, May 10, 1985 with President Charles H. Barrows officiating. The dedication took place on June 17, 1896, at which Barrows introduced the college’s fourth president, Laurence L. Doggett. As Springfield College's first dormitory, the completion of the Administration Building in January 1896 was a milestone in Springfield College history. The Washington Gladden Boathouse, on the shore of Lake Massasoit at the bottom of Rally Hill, was completed on March 19, 1901. At the request of Frank Beebe, who donated the materials for the boathouse, the structure was named after his friend, Reverend Washington Gladden. Plans for the boathouse were prepared by J. Claude Armstrong (class of 1903), a master carpenter was secured, and Frank N. Seerley was chosen to lead the construction. At the request of the student workers, two weeks of the academic year were set aside to build the boathouse. An early Springfield College tradition was for students to volunteer on school projects. The boathouse project is believed to be the first “Work Day” on Springfield College’s campus, a tradition which has since evolved into “Humanics in Action.” The completed building was two-stories and fifty-three feet by twenty-nine feet. The boathouse was dedicated on June 18, 1902, during commencement.
