This hand-colored lantern slide, “Builders of Sound Bodies (c. 1920),” shows a large group of gymnasts in West Gymnasium at the International YMCA College, now called Springfield College. Most are standing in formation around the perimeter of the room, but some are balancing on high bars and others are doing headstands. The students’ shirts have the YMCA triangle emblem on the front. Springfield College published this image in a promotional brochure titled “Building Builders of Men” (1926). During this time, Professor Leslie Judd coached Springfield’s famous gymnastics team, which gave exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Image used on page 28 of Building Builders of Men, 1926 brochure.
