Harry C. Buck Slide
Item Information
- Title:
- Harry C. Buck Slide
- Description:
-
This hand-colored lantern slide shows a portrait of Harry Crowe Buck along with a block of text describing the varied accomplishments of Springfield College alumni (then called the International YMCA College). Along with Buck, the text briefly discusses Elmer Berry, James S. Summers, Julio J. Rodriguez, Gunsun Hoh, and Max Yergan. During the 1930s, Springfield College used this slide as part of a recruitment presentation which included images of campus buildings, faculty, and students engaged in athletic and cultural activities. Harry Crowe Buck (1884-1943) was born in Liverpool and graduated from Springfield College in 1910 with a B.S. in Physical Education. In 1919, while teaching and coaching basketball at Galesburg High School in Illinois, he was invited by the International Committee of the YMCA to serve as the Physical Director of the Central YMCA in Madras, India. The Buck family traveled to Chennai (Madras) that year. The dingy, small gym of the Central YMCA and an open space exactly the dimensions of a basketball court were the only facilities, but Buck turned the space into the YMCA College of Physical Education. With a donation from the Indian Government, the YMCA expanded onto a 65-acre site in Saidapet. Buck continued to guide the college until his death in 1943. Slides were taken from "A Cinema of Springfield College," a pamphlet for prospective students published by Springfield College and made available from George Draper, Alumni Secretary.
