  <mods:abstract>This black and white photo shows C. Ward Crampton (May 26, 1877 - 1964), wearing skiis and smiling with a hand on hip. He is standing on a snowy hill with a few trees in the background. Writing on the back indicates that the photograph was taken in the hills behind the sanitarium at Battle Creek, Michigan. The sanitarium first opened on September 5, 1866 as the Western Health Reform Institute, based on the health principles advocated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church (it was renamed The Battle Creek Sanitarium in 1903). On its property, the sanitarium offered a range of outdoor activities, such as wood-chopping, basketball, swimming, and skiing. For a biography of C. While a little faded, the image is in good condition.</mods:abstract>
