An image of the senior physical class working on the Barnjum Bar Bell drill in East Gymnasium of Judd Gymnasia. Viewing the drill from the inclined running track are several members of the Junior class. Above the track is the visitor's gallery and on the right side of the image is a spiral staircase leading down to the building's locker rooms. Judd Gymnasia was the first building erected on the new land purchased for the YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, along Massasoit Lake in Springfield, Massachusetts. Morrissey and Shea’s Corporation completed construction on the building in September of 1894 and it was formally opened on October 26, 1894. The original gymnasium, known today as East Gymnasium, was where James Naismith taught classes and coached the school’s basketball team however it is not the gymnasium where basketball was invented. This photograph is also featured in the International YMCA Training School Physical Department Circular from 1895-96 on page 8. Handwritten notes on the back of this image read, "Interior of Gymnasium (East)" and "Gymnasium completed in 1894"; Series were added to this collection, changing the file name.
