  <mods:abstract>An article from the Reading Times (Reading, PA), titled "Leader Urges "Y" to Look Ahead, Not Backward," regarding a meeting that was held at the Wyomissing Club in which Leslie Tompkins gave an address concerning the future of the YMCA. In the address, Tompkins speaks of the need for the YMCA to engage the youth in decisions made by the YMCA and to embrace the problems of three distinct groups of which the YMCA - boys, young men between the ages of 18-28 and industrial workers. Tompkins spent his entire professional career working for the YMCA. After working as a general secretary in New York he became the executive for personnel services of the National Council of YMCAs in 1937. He helped to implement a new approach to personnel policies and established a new certification system. In 1946, he was named associate general secretary and served as executive of field services on the national staff until his retirement in 1957. He also served eight years as the executive director of the Association of Secretaries. A handwritten note under the headline indicates that this article was clipped from the March 8, 1944 Reading Times. Based on the articles on the reverse of this article, this appears to be the correct date.</mods:abstract>
