This paper titled "Our New Gymnastics" was written by Luther Gulick, and was read before the 28th International Convention of Young Men's Christian Association in Philadelphia that took place May 8-12, 1889. Gulick discusses the new gymnastics movement that is aimed to work on the development of each part of the body so that it can perform its proper functions at the right time, as well as focus on the mind, specifically a person's physical judgement, bodily self control, physical courage, and determination. He describes how a man is a unit, and each system of the body, mind and soul must work together to generate capacities. He goes on to discuss the three eras of physical education. The first era had the aim to excel in gymnastics and develop strength. The second era focused on the health and symmetry of the body, but did not reference other aspects of the body. The final era looks at the physique of a man as well as the purpose of the whole man, body. mind and soul. Gulick also looks at the methods that can be used in physical education, including a physical examination of each individual, measurements of the body parts, examination of the heart and lungs during rest and with activity, and finally any weaknesses of the individual.
