This is a letter written by Dr. Glenn Olds, president of Springfield College, to John W. Bunn, former head basketball coach at Springfield College, dated October 4, 1960. The letter is in response to a letter that Bunn wrote dated September 27th. In the letter Dr. Olds talks about the tradition of education at Springfield College, its Humanics philosophy, and how the school continues to follow this tradition. Rev. Dr. Glenn Alvero Olds (1921-2006) lived a multifaceted life. A colleague in 1978 described his early years as follows: “Born of a Catholic father and Mormon mother, influenced by Quaker upbringing and Methodist ministry, he worked his way through high school, college, and three graduate schools with honors and distinction – as a logger, ranch hand, park and forest ranger, professional boxer, dance band leader, dishwasher, and country preacher.” Olds served as president at Springfield College from July 1, 1958 to September 1, 1965, during which time he focused on curriculum revision, enrollment, long-range planning, organization, construction, and fundraising. At thirty-seven years old, he was the school’s second-youngest president. Olds left Springfield College in 1965 to accept a position as executive dean of the State University of New York, where he developed an international program for New York State’s system of colleges and universities. He later served as a special assistant for President Nixon, U.S. ambassador and representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and president at Kent State University and Alaska Pacific University. John William Bunn (September 26, 1898 – August 13, 1979) was an American basketball coach and Springfield College faculty member. The Wellston, Ohio native played three seasons under Coach Phog Allen at University of Kansas while earning his bachelor’s degree (1917–1921). He later became an assistant to Allen for nine seasons (1921–1930). In 1930, he became men's basketball head coach at Stanford University, where he coached college all-time great Hank Luisetti. Bunn went on to coach at Springfield College (1946–1956) and Colorado State College (now the University of Northern Colorado; 1956–63). Bunn served as Chairman of the Basketball Hall of Fame from 1949 to 1963. On October 1, 1964, Bunn was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor. For his contributions, the Basketball Hall of Fame annually presents an award in his name.
