Constitution of the YMCA of the Syrian Protestant College (1901-1902)

This eight page document is the constitution of the YMCA of the Syrian Protestant College, eventually the American University of Beirut, for 1901-1902. The pamphlet outlines the rules for the organization. Joseph A. Goodhue (March 1868 – April 1940) was born in Massachusetts and graduated in 1898 from the International YMCA Training School, now known as Springfield College. Shortly after graduation, he secured the position of physical director at Mecca College in Beirut, a position he held for five years. In that capacity, Goodhue introduced basketball to the Middle East. From 1902 to 1905, he served as physical director at the Syrian Protestant College. After his return from Syria, Goodhue worked as a physical director at YMCAs in a number of states, including Ohio, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. During his travels, he met Nora Velte, whom he married on June 15, 1909. They settled in Leominster, Massachusetts, and Goodhue began managing his father’s manufacturing company. Goodhue died on April 2, 1940.
