Ma on a three-day conference titled "Professor John Ma's Scientific Conference on Physical Education of University." The conference concluded on July 23, 1997. There were awards presented at the conference and those awards were described Also at the conference, Ma Qiwei (马启伟； the son of John Ma and brother of Carl Ma) was nominated as a recipient for the "Lifetime devotion to the work of University physical education with extraordinary contribution." He is also shown in the photo (left).
