Students working on grounds at the athletic fields

A black and white picture depicting students digging the grounds at Pratt Field at the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College). Some of the students are shoveling dirt into a horse carriage. In the background there are several white houses lined next to the field. The exact date of the photograph is not known, though it is likely taken around 1910 when Pratt Field was first constructed. Pratt Field was a gift of Mr. Herbert L. Pratt. It consisted, originally, of a quarter mile track, 220 yard straightaway twenty-four feet wide, eleven runaways and pits for jumping and valuting, seven tennis courts, a football field, and a baseball diamond. A reinforced concrete fence that was eight feet high surrounded the field. The entrances were designed by Edward Lippincourt Tilton who also designed Judd Gymnasia and the Marsh Memorial Building on Campus. The location of Pratt field is still used today for track and field, however the name was changed to Blake Track.
