Description:
A two-page letter from Frank N. Seerley to Samuel S. Trumpour, dated July 9th, 1917. In this letter, Seerley gives Trumpour updates on many of the soldiers on the front line with some dying; however, he notes a large percent of men are still alive and well. He also tells him about new developments with the college, including a future reduction in the number of men attending next year and conducting a summer school for army work secretaries. Lastly, Seerley tells Trumpour how much he appreciates the latter's letter as it was the first one received from a prisoner of war and hopes that his health improves. Frank N. Seerley graduated from the International Young Men’s Christian Association College in 1890 and began working at the college as an instructor in the same year. He served as a member of the Springfield Board of Education from 1896 to 1912. In 1907, he served as an official lecturer for the American Society of Sanitary and Moral Prophylaxis. From 1917 to 1918, he gave lectures on sex hygiene in encampments for the War Work Council. After World War 1, he served as Dean of Springfield College from 1918 to 1934. Seerley was awarded the Tarbell Medallion in 1942. Lance Corporal Samuel Solmes. Trumpour attended Springfield College from 1912 to 1913. He served with the the 5th. Royal Highlanders from October 14, 1914 until he left to serve with the 1st British Columbia Regiment on February 9, 1915. He was taken as a prisoner of war at the Second Battle of Ypres on April 24, 1915. He was discharged on January 22, 1918 for being medically unfit for further military service.
