<mods:abstract>A photograph portraying international students and Dr. Wiel gathered in a room. Everyone is looking at a magazine held by Dr. Wiel, who is pictured in the middle wearing a suit. A book shelf and some flags can be observed in the background. A typed caption on the back stated that the photograph depicted a meeting of the Cosmopolitan Club, the original name for Springfield College’s International Students Organization. The caption also states that the two women depicted in the photograph were from Hawaii, and that the man on the right was from Panama, and the man in the middle was from Holland. Dr. Theodore A. Wiel was born in Wiljandi, Estonia on March 2, 1893. For more information on the history of the Springfield College Cosmopolitan Club, see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/corporate_entities/139 Dr. Theodore A. Wiel was born in Wiljandi, Estonia on March 2, 1893. During World War I, he served in France as a Sergeant in the field artillery. Wiel worked at American International College from 1932 until 1946, when he began teaching history and international relations at Springfield College. Based on Catalog listings, Dr. Wiel appears to have left Springfield College in 1960. A typed paper with a caption on the back of the photograph reads: "Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts Release: Upon Receipt Cut lines: Students from many lands and of all colors and creeds are studying for careers of service to humanity at Springfield College. Here members of the Cosmopolitan Club, an organization designed to promote international understanding and good will, talk with Dr. Theodore Wiel, faculty advisor who is a native of Estonia. The two girls are Hawaiian, one boy is from Holland, and the other boy is a native of Panama."</mods:abstract>
