<mods:abstract>A group photograph of students of the Springfield College International Academy taken as part of a class trip to Boston, MA. The photograph was taken by Mark E. Kasianowicz of the massachusetts Legislative Service Bureau on November 10, 1988. The Massachusetts State House’ staits can be seen in the background. Also, professor Charles J. Smith stands first from the left side of the photograph. Pictured from top row, left to right stand: Joanna Wong Wai Ling, Alice Tsui Lui, Mandel Tang, naoko Akamatsu, Winnie Li Wung Ying, Fumiya Sakamoto, Macy Leung Mei Sze. Second row from the top, left to right stand: Winnie Shiao Wai Kay, Tomoko Tanaka, Visitor, Winey Wong, Patricia Cheung Tsz Pui, Pauline Cheng Pui Ling. Third row from the top, left to righ stand: Ada Chiu Siu Han. Maureen Ng, Victor Lam Wing Chak, Ben Lai Chung Kan, Fanny Lee Wai Fong, Ben Charles Ho Man Chung, Peter Yuen Yip Hung. Forth row from the top, left to right stand: Charles Smith, Stoney Chan Sek Tung, Arthur Leung Shing Fo, Raymond Yam King Yeung, Daniel Cham Chi Yuen, Upton Chik Pui Cheong, Joe Yan Hoi, David Wu, Kwok Chun, Alrum Luk Wai Ka, guide. Some students, part of the International Academy for the 1988-1989 were not pictured, including Stanley Tseng Ming Chik, Kotaro Omori (both students joined the college in January 1989), and Daphne Yu Sau Mui. Charles J. Smith served as the director of the International Academy at Springfield College, later renamed to the International English Language Institute at the College, from 1986-1999. Smith was instrumental in strengthening international relationships between the College and countries in Asia, including China, Japan, and Taiwan. Following his retirement in 1999, Smith continued to build international partnerships between the College and students in the Far East. Not only did Smith have an impact on international relations with the College, but he also served as a Springfield College swimming coach for 23 years from 1966 through 1989. During his long-standing tenure with the swimming program, he instructed both the men’s and women’s teams on different occasions, as well as serving as diving coach for a period of time starting in 1967. From 1986-1989, Smith performed double duty leading the swimming programs and also directing the International Academy. Identification of the date and the photographer is from a stamp on the back of the photograph. We believe that the date stamp has the wrong year on it as it says November 10, 1987. November 10, 1988 was used.;</mods:abstract>
