<mods:abstract>A photograph showing a group of soldiers standing in front of tents in a wooded area at Camp Hamilton in Lexington Kentucky, ca. 1898. Many of the men pictured are either standing or squatting, with some holding bottles or mugs filled with liquid. Written on the back of the photograph is, "1st Territorial Canteen / Camp Hamilton Lexington Ky / Just after Pay Day!". Like many southern military structures, Camp Hamilton was erected by early settlers for their protection. During the Spanish American War and its operation, it housed the Signal Corps, Second Division, the First Territorial, the Twelfth New York, Third Missouri, and Tenth Immunes. However, all vestige of the camp has now disappeared. The exact location Camp Hamilton is not positively known today, but reference is made to them in State histories, State papers, etc.</mods:abstract>
