<mods:abstract>This is a letter from Mark Nestle, a Springfield College alumnus, to President Donald C. Stone, regarding the nominations of the Tarbell Memorial Award (November 9, 1953). Mark Nestle wrote the letter to nominate two alumni from the Philippines, Regino Ylanan and Candido Bartolome to be recipients of the Tarbell Medallion, an award provided through a grant made in 1934 by Edward Norris Tarbell of the class of 1889. Nestle mentioned that Bartolome was planning to return to Springfield and seek a Doctoral degree in Physical Education, but was struggling financially. Based on other documents of Bartolome, it is believed that he did not return to Springfield as he planned. Resumes of Bartolome and Dr. Ylanan (https://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p15370coll2/id/21510/rec/15) might be attached to this letter. Candido Bartolome is the father of Physical Education of the Philippines. He graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1923 with his B.S.E. degree and in 1926 with his M.A. degree. In 1929, he earned both B.P.E and M.P.E degrees from Springfield College (then known as International YMCA College). He then returned to the Philippines and established the Department of Physical Education in the University of the Philippines system. He represented the Philippines in the Olympic Games as swimming coach in Los Angeles (1932), Berlin (1936), and London (1948), and as transportation and procurement manager in Melbourne (1956) and Tokyo (1964). He served as the Vice-President of the International Council of Sport of UNESCO for ten years, and took on leadership roles in many national and international organizations. Worked in the Department of Physical Education at University of the Philippines for 43 years, he was appointed as Professor Emeritus in 1968. In 1975, Candido Bartolome received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanics from Springfield College. In 1979, Springfield College awarded him a Distinguished Alumni Award.</mods:abstract>
