This is photograph of the Class of 1898 alumni who returned for their golden jubilee reunion held at Springfield College on June 1948. They are in two rows, with the first row seated and the second row standing, behind the dinner table that still has the cups and plates on it. Pictured in the photograph are (first row, left to right) Mrs. Lewis E. Hawkins, Dr. Laurence L. Doggett, Mrs. Wilfred H. Chapin & Mrs. Joseph A. Goodhue, and (second row, left to right) Dr. Carlos D. Clapp, John G. Camp, Arthur H. Greeley and Robert S. Ross. Joseph A. Goodhue (March 1868 – April 1940) was born in Massachusetts and graduated in 1898 from the International YMCA Training School, now known as Springfield College. Shortly after graduation, he secured the position of physical director at Mecca College in Beirut, a position he held for five years. In that capacity, Goodhue introduced basketball to the Middle East. From 1902 to 1905, he served as physical director at the Syrian Protestant College. After his return from Syria, Goodhue worked as a physical director at YMCAs in a number of states, including Ohio, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. During his travels, he met Nora Velte, whom he married on June 15, 1909. They settled in Leominster, Massachusetts, and Goodhue began managing his father’s manufacturing company. Goodhue died on April 2, 1940.
