Item Information
- Title:
- The Woods Hall Hoosit (October 16, 1915)
- Description:
-
This is the first issue of the Woods Hall "Hoosit" newsletter (October 16, 1915). The newsletter includes editorial comments, personal notes, important announcements, coming events, an advertising column, and other interesting notes. The price of the newsletter was 5 cents, and the editor, Springfield College (then known as International YMCA College) alumnus Charles Hewson, stated that anyone who will sweep out the editor's room daily can get the newsletter for free. Other than Charles Hewson, people mentioned in the newsletter are Frank Armitage, Harold Fice, Ed. Smith, Roy Begg, George Taylor, Joe Bunker, Pete Van Geyt, Arthur Hirst, Henry Burtis, and Howard House. Recognizing the need for greater social opportunities for the students of the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, Mrs. Eleanor S. Woods provided the funds for Woods Hall. Woods Hall was erected on May 23, 1904 and dedicated on September 28 of that same year as a social and dining hall on campus. Woods, a member of the Merriam family (Webster’s dictionary) donated $18,000 for the project. The central feature of Woods Hall was a dining room which could accommodate 125 or more guests. The first floor of the building also contained a parlor while the second floor was designated for dorm rooms. The building was renovated a number of times during its existence, the most significant renovation occurring in 1961 at which time it received a complete face-lift leaving it unrecognizable as the original Woods Hall. In 2008, Woods Hall was demolished to make way for the construction of the Richard B. Flynn Campus Union which was dedicated on February 4, 2010.
