Excerpt from Telegram from the War Department concerning the Student Army Training Corps (August 26, 1918)

A document including an excerpt from a telegram from the War Department concerning the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) to the International Young Men's Christian Association College, now Springfield College, on August 26, 1918. The telegram states that a SATC unit would be because the college satisfied conditions. Also included are the general plans that the program must follow to operate, the results of being in the program, and the courses offered by the college. The SATC was formed on October 1, 1918, and the one-hundred and eight students enrolled in the program were held in barracks on campus. At Springfield College, the SATC disbanded on December 21, 1918. In April 1918, the National Army Training Detachments program was established at one hundred and fifty-seven colleges, universities, and trade schools under contract with the War Department. The program was designed to train draftees in a variety of trades needed for the war effort, and was jointly administered by the military and the university. The proposed Student Army Training Corps, according to Carol Gruber, would serve to develop “as a great military asset the large body of young men in the colleges and.. [to prevent] unnecessary and wasteful depletion of the colleges through indiscriminate volunteering, by offering the student a definite and immediate military status." (Mars and Minerva 215). This item was original bound in a book titled “War-Work Courses in Great War, 1917-1918 Incomplete.” This volume was unbound and its contents foldered in the original order, which is chronological. The binding string was cut and the glue was removed with a razor blade. The edges are intact and the placement of stitches are visible. Each page or booklet was individually lifted out of the binding and placed in their own folder or a folder with like materials.
