<mods:abstract>This photograph shows a group of children listening to recorded music at Camp Massasoit, located at Springfield College's East Campus. One woman is using the music player as all the children look on. Some children are sitting on benches while others are sitting on the floor. The picture was taken in the Post Lodge in the Pueblo of the Seven Fires on East Campus at Springfield College. The wall murals are part of the murals painted by native American artist Wo Peen. The Pueblo of the Seven Fires is the only authentic southwestern pueblo structure east of the Mississippi, was dedicated in 1932 and originally provided meeting space, activity areas, storage, and living accommodations for the East Campus caretaker. The 4,4000 square-foot structure follows a classic southwestern design, with walls 24” thick at the base, tapering to 16” at the top. The floors are made of brick and the original roof was constructed of oak planks lying beneath a tarred layer overlaid with two or more inches of sand and soil to provide both insulation and fire protection from potential forest fires. The interior of the Pueblo features seven fire places, including a large fireplace donated by 4-H clubs. The seven fires refer to the seven fires of youth: self-expression, universality, ruggedness, regret/humility, truth, comradeship and beauty. The picture is not dated, but it is assumed to have been taken between 1935 and 2000. Camp Massasoit is available to children during the summer months. It is considered a character building experience for children and allows them to stay active during the summer. The kids participate in rope climbing, canoeing, and a variety of activities that allow the kids to have hands on experience. They focus on four areas of respect at the camp, including respect for self, peers, counselors and the environment. Camp Massasoit started in 1935. Springfield College's East Campus is still used as it was originally intended, hosting students pursuing the outdoor recreation degree as well as “Freshman Camp,” “Outdoor Pursuits" leadership development, and other team-building experiences.</mods:abstract>
